Never Have I Ever for couples: 40 questions that start a story

Never Have I Ever is the oldest drinking game there is, and most lists of questions for it are terrible. They are either so tame nobody has a story, or so blunt the room goes quiet and someone checks their phone.

Here is the fix, and it works for two people or ten: anyone who has done it tells the story, or drinks. The sip is the way out. The story is the game. Suddenly a list of statements turns into the best conversation you have had all year.

How to play

  1. Agree your level first. Below there are four: Clean, Flirty, Steamy and Uncovered. Each of you picks the furthest you want to go, and you play to the lower answer. No debate.
  2. Take turns reading a statement that starts "Never have I ever...".
  3. Anyone who has done it either tells the story, briefly, or takes a sip.
  4. Anyone can pass on a story with no reason given. Sips, not shots. Water counts.

That is it. With two of you, alternate who reads. With a group, go round the circle.

Uncovered: only if everyone said so

We keep this list short on purpose. If your group agreed to go here, you will not need much help.

  1. Never have I ever been somewhere I really should not have been, with someone I really should not have been with.
  2. Never have I ever been watched.
  3. Never have I ever been to a party where the dress code was optional.
  4. Never have I ever said yes to something I had always said no to.
  5. Never have I ever been to a hotel just for the night.
  6. Never have I ever kept a fantasy to myself for years.
  7. Never have I ever tried something once and asked for it again.
  8. Never have I ever been somewhere I could not tell anyone about.
  9. Never have I ever been the most adventurous person in the room.
  10. Never have I ever played this game to this level before tonight.

Why the story rule changes everything

Most party questions die because they ask for a tally. A tally is a number. A story is a person. When someone has to tell you how they ended up asked to leave a party, you learn more about them in ninety seconds than in a month of small talk.

The story rule also takes the pressure off the spicier lists. Nobody has to confess anything they do not want to. A sip is always allowed, and a sip says plenty on its own.

Keep it kind

Two quick rules for groups. First, never point. "Never have I ever fancied someone in this room" is fun when people drink in silence and awful when someone is singled out. Second, if the room goes quiet, drop a level. It is a game, and games are meant to be fun for everyone playing them.

Questions

How do you play Never Have I Ever as a couple?

Take turns reading a statement. Anyone who has done it tells the story, or takes a sip. With two players, take it in turns to read and both answer.

Do you have to drink?

No. Soft drinks count, and you can play with no drinks at all. The story is the point, the sip is just the way out.

How spicy should we go?

Agree before you start. Pick a level you are both happy with, and play to whoever chose the lower one.

Can we play this with friends?

Yes. Stick to the first two lists in mixed company, and only go further if everyone in the room is up for it.

Play Spark. The party night: say it, do it, or drink.
